SUV spectacle: 410 hp in the ABT RS Q3
SUV alternatives to hot hatches like a Golf R or Audi S3 had been a rarity until in 2013, the racy Audi RS Q3 with its 310 bhp/228 kW was rolled out.
Those Bavarian ABT Sportsline engineers then saw even more potential in this chic car and wanted to put it on an equal footing with real sports cars. Extensive tests on their own 10 million Euro dynamometer and public roads followed.
They found that the 2.5l five-cylinder engine would easily bear a permanent 32 % uprating, provided the engineers were careful. Now, the ABT version of the RS Q3 has 410 bhp or 301 kW; the maximum torque is 530 Nm, up from the standard 420 Nm. All this was achieved by ABT Power New Generation. “This complex and gentle processes uses a specially developed control unit – ABT Engine Control – with customised software,“ says Hans-Jürgen Abt, CEO of the globally largest tuner of Volkswagen and Audi cars.
In Geneva, ABT will present the converted SUV in an “innocent” white shade with an impressive decor which will then make this virginal colour lose its innocence right away.
If you saw this SUV in your rear view, it will look imposing just like it’s hot hatch counterparts: An ABT grill and front skirt will fill your mirrors. Once its passed you will see the sporty breeding continues, with it’s rear skirt and trademark Quad exhaust system.
As with all ABT conversions, having more power and looking good, is nothing without the stopping and control. A height-adjustable sport-type suspension provides a maximum of road feedback and dynamism. The 21-inch ABT DR alloy wheels not only look “fast” but improve its hold on the road
